Woody Allen hatte die Ehre, mit seinem Film „Hollywood Ending“ das 55. Festival in Cannes zu eröffnen. Die Zeremonie wurde von Frankreichs Leinwandliebling Virginie Ledoyen moderiert, die für die Begegnung mit Regielegende Woody Allen eine schwarz-weiße Chanel-Robe trug. „Hollywood Ending“ ist Woody Allens persönliches Dankeschön an die filmverrückten Franzosen, mit dem er Gelächter und Szenenapplaus erntete: „Gott sei gedankt, dass die Franzosen existieren“, war von Allen auf der Leinwand zu hören. Sein Humor begeisterte auch die Journalisten vor Ort. Auf die Frage von Harald Schmidts Reporterin Nathalie Licard, was er davon halte, dass die Franzosen Frösche und Schnecken verspeisen, antwortete er trocken: „Im Prinzip gilt dafür dasselbe wie mit der Liebe: wer‘s mag. Wenn jemand ab und an richtig Lust hat auf ‘ne ordentliche Schnecke - warum nicht? Ich selbst könnte weder Frosch noch Schnecke runterkriegen. Auch Pferdefleisch oder Hund würde ich nie essen - obwohl das bestimmt um Längen besser ist als Affenhirn.“

Einen großen Auftritt hatte auch Jury-Mitglied Sharon Stone auf der Croisette, der palmenbesäumten Prachtpromenade am Strand. Die Smoking tragenden Fotografen rissen sich vor der legendären roten Treppe des „Palais du Festival“ um den Weltstar. Die Gästeliste 2002 liest sich wie ein „Who‘s Who“ der internationalen Filmwelt: Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, Claudia Cardinale, Antonio Banderas, Martin Scorsese, Monica Bellucci, David Lynch und viele andere.

Die 55 Festivaljahre werden heute Abend mit einem ganz besonderen Spektakel gefeiert. Entlang der Croisette sind 55 Säulen mit großen Scheinwerfern so gestaltet, dass sie abends wie überdimensionale Geburtstagskerzen erscheinen. Als Glückwunsch-Potpourri zu dieser „Geburtstagstorte“ wird Filmmusik aus Lautsprechern erklingen, die auf der Strecke zwischen den Hotelpalästen „Majestic“ und „Martinez“ aufgestellt sind. Der Tribut an große Filmmusikkomponisten wie Ennio Morricone, Michael Nyman oder Francis Lai wird heute Abend um neun Uhr in einem großen öffentlichen Konzert gipfeln, das die berühmten Musiker am früheren Casino „Palm Beach“ geben werden. Monk starts fund to rebuild statues

HONG KONG- A Buddhist museum in Taiwan donated HK$1 million (US$128,200) to kickstart a campaign to help rebuild two giant Buddhist statues destroyed last year by Taliban extremists in Afghanistan. „We want to rebuild them and urge other religious groups to join us (to pay for it),“ said Venerable Dharma Master Hsin Tao of Taiwan‘s Museum of World Religions, which he founded.

Speaking to Reuters in Hong Kong, where he is currently visiting to publicise his campaign, the monk also urged religious groups the world over to help protect holy artefacts. „If all religious groups can come together, everyone will be able to come to a common understanding to protect all religious relics in the future,“ said the monk, 55.

The Taliban destroyed many artworks in Afghanistan, including the world-famous Buddha statues in Bamiyan, as they saw them as abominations to the fiercely fundamentalist version of Islam they imposed in Afghanistan from 1996 to their fall last November. Afghanistan‘s interim leader Hamid Karzai said earlier this year the country hoped to rebuild the statues. „Experts say the reconstruction will cost US$25 million and take four years. We want to start this so that more people will be aware of this issue and its importance,“ said the soft-spoken monk, draped in maroon and orange robes. „After I heard they were destroyed, something so old and so precious, I thought what if other religious relics should suffer the same fate?“ he said. Born Yang Chin-sheng in 1948 in Myanmar, he lost both his parents when he was just four. The young orphan then roamed the country scavenging for odd jobs before becoming entangled in the chaos of China‘s revolution. Then only nine years old, he found himself taking up arms to fight communist guerillas before retreating with the Nationalists to Taiwan in 1961.

It was in Taiwan that he found his true calling and began his monastic life at 25. Later, he spent 10 years meditating in a graveyard in Taiwan and another two in a cave. He will head for Kabul at the end of the month where he will participate in a conference organised by UNESCO on how best to reconstruct the two statues. (Reuters)

CANNES, France - Last year, the threat of a Hollywood actors‘ strike cast a giant shadow over Cannes. Now the stars are burning bright again at the world‘s most famous film festival. For Wednesday night‘s gala opening, even the publicity-shy Woody Allen ran the gauntlet, facing a barrage of paparazzi as he walked up the famed red carpet for the launch of his bittersweet comedy „Hollywood Ending“. As the first night showed, the buzz is back in Cannes. The glitz and glamour have gone into overdrive.

Last year, Jodie Foster pulled out as president of the festival jury at the last moment. Stars stayed away in droves as Hollywood studios, fearing an actors‘ strike that in the end never materialised, rushed several films into production. This year‘s jury is headed by offbeat director David Lynch. The winner of the coveted Palme d‘Or in 1990 with „Wild at Heart“ is now on the other side of the fence and he was the first to admit: „To judge our fellow filmmakers is really a most terrible job.“ Even James Bond is taking a break from filming to fly into Cannes. Pierce Brosnan will be here for a spectacular weekend party for movie moguls. Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz are coming to Cannes for an eagerly awaited showing of footage from Martin Scorsese‘s „Gangs of New York“. And the Hollywood highrollers don‘t stop there — Jack Nicholson is making up for his 2001 „No Show“ and George Lucas is in town on Thursday, the day that his latest „Star Wars“ epic hits screens worldwide.
